If you’ve been finding yourself overeating or drinking too much, it may be an indication that you are psychic and attempting to suppress your psychic abilities.
As cool as it may seem to be able to communicate with the dead, receive telepathic messages and know the future before it happens, a lot of people find that psychic ability makes them feel uncomfortable.
All it can take to turn you off to psychic ability is to get a single premonition that something unwanted will happen to a loved one and then watch it happen. Or just as unsettling, you might have a dream about a major national or global tragedy and then turn on CNN and see the event actually unfold.
Not to mention the fact that it can be unsettling to see a ghost or have an otherworldly being reach out and make contact with you.

So what do you do when you are sensitive to the thoughts or emotions of others but you don’t want to be? How do you cope when you know things you don’t really want to to know? Many people cope using bad habits.
Suppressing your sensitivity
At the heart of psychic ability, whether you are clairvoyant, clairaudient or a medium is a sensitivity to information. When your psychic abilities are strong, you are able to pick up on subtle information that other people miss. You may feel like you are a human lie detector or sense energy around you that others are completely unaware of.
If you don’t want to take in this information, you might set out to make yourself less sensitive, even if it’s only temporarily. Here are some ways that people do that — you may realize that you do some of these things yourself.
This is a very common one. In fact, food, particularly junk food, can ground you. Some people even eat junk food after they have done intensive spiritual work because it helps them to feel more rooted to their bodies.
I’ve known many a professional psychic with weight challenges, as they find themselves gravitating toward food when they are spiritually exhausted. If you’ve noticed a change to your eating habits after using your psychic skills more, you might want to pay attention to this.
You drink a lot of wine or alcohol
I’m all for a cocktail or glass of wine every now and then. However, some people use alcohol to dull their senses and blunt any psychic ability that is coming through. I’ve found this to be the case moreso when someone is uncomfortable with some of the information they are picking up on. They may not understand why they sense things and rather than deal with the uncertainty, they use alcohol to dull their senses.
This can be a dangerous game because you may find yourself becoming overly dependent on alcohol as a way of avoiding a natural ability.
There is a caveat. Not everyone drinks alcohol to suppress their psychic abilities. There are some people who say alcohol can help them loosen up, which helps them to more easily receive psychic information. If you’ve ever read the metaphysical classic work titled The Seth Material by Jane Roberts, you may know that she would regularly drink wine before she would go into a trance and channel information.
You are a drama queen
Here’s a surefire way to avoid dealing with premonitions and other psychic abilities. Create so much drama in your life that you don’t have time (or energy) to wonder about it. Sometimes people create chaos because it gives them an excuse to focus on what’s going on externally rather than pay attention to the information they are picking up on internally.
You can’t stand silence
There is a reason why meditation is recommended when you’re trying to enhance your psychic abilities. When you are still and focus your thoughts, it is often easier to pick up on subtle psychic energy. If there is a lot of noise and chaos around you, it can be more difficult.
In fact, you might receive psychic information yet be so distracted that you miss it entirely. If you are the type of person who turns the television or radio on the minute you get home because you need ‘background’ noise, ask yourself if there is something in the silence that you are trying to avoid.
Why you should not suppress your psychic abilities
Here’s the thing. You may think you’re handling your psychic abilities by suppressing and in the process avoiding them. However, you may be actually doing more harm than good.
Whatever you resist persists. If you run from your psychic skills they are likely to erupt at the most inopportune time and place.
Not to mention the fact that some of these habits can be downright harmful. Eating too much junk food and drinking excessively are simply bad ideas all the way around.
A better way to stop the sensitivity temporarily is to shut down your psychic senses. You literally have the power to say ‘no’ to too much psychic energy coming through at a particular time.
There are a number of ways you can do this:
You can call up your Spirit Guides and ask them to help you temporarily shut your psychic senses down.
If you have a gatekeeper — a special Spirit Guide that serves as an intermediary between you and other spiritual beings — you can tell your gatekeeper to shut down any connections for the time being. (You can read more about gatekeepers in this article.)
You can simply set the intention that your psychic work is done for the day. When you close your mind to the idea, a shield literally goes up keeping psychic information from coming through.
