Crystals for tarot

Last Updated on May 23, 2024

I’m a  proponent of using multiple types of metaphysical tools together. I find that it gives my rituals and practices more focused energy, and ultimately makes them more effective. Tarot and crystals can go hand in hand and can complement one another. Some may even find that certain crystals can make it easier for you to receive and interpret messages.

So what types of crystals work best with tarot cards? It depends on what you’re trying to achieve. Here are some crystals that can help you achieve your tarot-related goals.

Crystals for tarot reading

If your goal is to use tarot to read for yourself or for others, the best crystals to have are those that facilitate a spiritual connection. My favorite crystal for this purpose is amethyst.  (See some of the qualities of amethyst here.

Amethyst  is known for helping to open the crown chakra, which is a direct connection to spiritual energies. Some people sleep near amethyst with the hopes of inspiring psychic dreams or astral travel. It can also help to open your third eye and promote your understanding of what tarot cards may be trying to tell you in a reading. If I’m doing a reading for myself and I’m confused about what the cards are trying to say, I typically take a break and meditate for a few minutes holding a piece of amethyst. Then when I go back to the reading, I find that I see the spread with new eyes. I also try to keep my amethyst nearby when I work with my cards because I want help in opening the spiritual connection..

Crystals for protection

While I don’t believe there is anything negative about working with tarot cards, I recognize that some people have had different experiences. If you believe you’ve encountered negative energies when working with tarot cards, consider breaking out a piece of black tourmaline and setting it next to you before you start laying out your spread. Other crystals that can help with protection include obsidian and hematite.

Crystals for cleansing your cards

When you use tarot cards, you open a portal to the spiritual realm. That uses a lot of energy, some of which could find itself trapped in the cards and can affect future readings. It’s a good idea to cleanse your tarot cards every once in awhile particularly if you haven’t cleansed them for a long time or if someone other than you has handled the cards. Some crystals that can help to cleanse your cards include citrine and clear quartz. Simply take one of these crystals and place it next to your cards when you aren’t using them.
