What does the fool tarot card mean?

Posted on May 20, 2024May 20, 2024 by Mara Enid

If the fool tarot card comes up in a reading, the message for you may be to get comfortable with the idea of starting a new adventure. The fool reminds us of the excitement that comes with the beginning of a new journey and the willingness to take a step into the unknown.

The fool tarot card

In some tarot decks the fool is depicted as a young man that is about to step off of the edge of a cliff. While that could sound risky and dangerous, the energy of the card suggests that if you fearlessly step off of the edge, the Universe will catch and support you.

The fool also carries a small bag, which suggest that he is traveling light and not bringing a lot of baggage with him. A small dog accompanies him in some decks, representing a loyal companion he can trust.

When might the fool tarot card show up in your life?

The fool in love could show up when you’re contemplating starting a new relationship, or perhaps if you’re thinking about ending one that you are already in. Perhaps you’ve been thinking about exploring online dating. The fool could be telling you that now is a good time to go all in.

The fool in money or business could show up if you’re thinking about applying for a new job, considering starting a side business or  considering a new investment. It tells you the time is right and consider throwing caution to the wind as you’re unlikely to be disappointed.

The fool can urge you to say yes to a life-changing beginning or something extremely small. For example, the fool could whisper to you that now is the time to move cross-country, or it could suggest that you sign up for that cooking class.

If you pick a tarot card to represent you and the fool shows up, it could indicate that you’re already on a new adventure and now is the time to stay the course. If the reversed fool shows up to represent you, it could be warning you that you’re being reckless, impulsive or moving too fast.

What about when the fool is reversed?

When the fool is reversed, the message could be that now is not the time to start that new relationship or accept that new job. It could also be for you to take a more cautious approach. A reversed fool can remind us not to be reckless and impulsive but to balance taking a risk with more planning and preparation.

When you’re not sure of the fool’s message for you

If you get the message of the fool but you’re unsure of how it applies to your life, one way to find out could be to sleep with it under your pillow and ask for insight into what the message is for you at the time.  Set the intention to remember your dreams and be prepared to either write down what you remember from your dream or to record your impressions. You could also ask that same question before beginning a meditation session.

Other ways to work with the fool’s energy to explore what it might be trying to tell you include the following:

Take a different route to or from work.

Start a new hobby.

Go to a restaurant you’ve never been to and try a type of cuisine you’ve never tried before.

Change something about your wardrobe, hair or other appearance.

By focusing on the first time for something you’re reminding yourself that new beginnings are  necessary and when the opportunity meets the moment, magic can be made.
