For those who weren’t in the know, the Etsy Witch became a thing last year in the wake of the death of Charlie Kirk. You remember the story. Shortly after Kirk was killed at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, an article that had been published by the publication Jezebel a couple of days before the murder surfaced. In it, the writer claimed to have paid an Etsy witch to curse Kirk.
Whether you believe the curse had anything to do with Kirk’s death or not, the idea that there were Etsy witches available to buy hexes and curses from was intriguing, particularly to those who didn’t know such a thing was possible.
But now it seems that Etsy itself wasn’t too pleased with all of the attention and they cracked down on the sale of hexes and curses and other metaphysical services, as well. As a result, Etsy witches are reportedly fleeing the site, according to the Religion News Service.
But there’s a good side to this. The witches aren’t losing their livelihoods. Their services appear to be as popular as ever. Instead, they’re taking their businesses to their personal web sites, which they own and can control the content of.
Why are their services so popular right now? People turn to metaphysics during times of trouble. And unlike the dangerous times for metaphysicians that took place during previous eras in which Fascism was popular, the witches and other magical people are holding onto their power.
