Karmic Debt: How to Recognize it and Clear it

karmic debt

Lately, I’ve been fascinated by the concept of karmic debt. It refers to the baggage we carry around with us that results from our past life deeds. When we’ve acted in a way that causes negative consequences to others, you’d better believe we’re going to have an experience that throws that negative energy back to us just like a boomerang.

You may wonder if it’s like karma. A little. With karma, the good we do in the world comes back to us — but so does the bad. So there’s a 50-50 chance karma can be enjoyable vs being a royal pain in the neck. However karmic debt is pretty much something we’d rather avoid 100 percent of the time.

When unwanted experiences have happened to me i.e. breakups, financial setbacks, a cancer diagnosis I’ve often wondered if my bad luck was the result of bad behavior in a former life. In other words, I’ve wondered if I was experiencing the consequences of karmic debt. If you’ve ever wondered the same, read on to learn how you can find out.

What is karmic debt?

There is a well-known law in physics: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Sometimes it’s easy to see the reaction. If you accidentally step on a dog’s tail, he or she will bark or squeal. But other times, we don’t see the reaction immediately or we don’t have a close enough perspective to identify the reaction. For example, if you call a friend to tell them you won’t be able to attend their destination wedding, you may not immediately see how disappointed they are or notice that your friendship has been altered forever.  Karma is a reaction to every action, whether we recognize it or not.

Ever heard the term ‘what you put in is what you get out?’ That’s pretty much how karma works. If you are kind to people, people will be kind to you. If you rob and steal from others, others will rob and steal from you. However, you don’t always experience karma for a past action in this lifetime. Sometimes the lessons of karma travel with you from one lifetime to another.

When we have experiences that are a direct result of the negative actions we took in a previous lifetime, we are experiencing karmic debt.

The pros and cons of karmic debt

On the surface, it might seem like karmic debt is a bad thing. But there are good things about karmic debt too. Among the pros of karmic debt:

  1. It creates new experiences. One of the reasons we exist in human form is so we can have a multitude of experiences. As long as we have lessons to learn, we will keep coming back in human form so we have the opportunity to learn them.
  2. It helps us to grow and evolve. We don’t always grow when times are good. In fact, when we experience the greatest challenges, we typically experience the most growth. Karmic debt isn’t designed to punish us; rather, it exists to teach us. As we experience the consequences of our actions, we learn what actions and behaviors will yield the results we want.
  3. It teaches us lessons. We all want to be better people, don’t we? At least I like to think that we do. Karmic debt forces us to face up to our past life mistakes and ensures that we get the lesson eventually, whether that happens in this lifetime or the next or the one after that.

So what are the cons of karmic debt?

It’s typically not pleasant. Karmic debt tends to show up in those areas of our lives that we’re not good at. If we keep losing one job after another there may be a karmic debt playing out in our career. If we have bad luck with relationships, we may be experiencing karmic debt related to how we treated someone in a past life relationship.  If there is an area of your life that you feel bad about you may be facing the consequences of karmic debt.

Why everyone has karmic debt

While you may not be experiencing karmic debt today, chances are you’ve experienced it before either in this lifetime or another. If not, chances are you will experience it in another lifetime. Nobody goes through all of their lifetimes with absolute wisdom; it is through our lifetimes that we become wise. And one of the best ways to become wise is to make mistakes and to pay for them.

If you’re reading this content, chances are you are someone that is spiritually evolved. However, there have also probably been lifetimes where you weren’t quite as evolved as you are today. Think about people you know who don’t think twice about lying and manipulating in order to get their way. We all have seen people who appear to be driven by money and greed and who will hurt others in order to hold onto power or success.

Think about people who you know who aren’t as evolved as you. But you likely weren’t as evolved in other lifetimes. Since we all have lived many lifetimes, we get to experience life through different perspectives. Sometimes the best way to learn something is to experience it. It’s one thing to read about something in a book. It’s another to experience it first-hand. Karmic debt allows you to learn how harmful certain actions can be at such a soul level that you will be able to carry those lessons with you forever.

How to know if you carry karmic debt

Having a string of bad experiences can indicate karmic debt, but there is an easier way to tell if you are carrying it in this lifetime. You can turn to numerology

Certain numbers indicate that you are carrying karmic debt. They are 13, 14, 16, and 19. If those numbers crop up in your personal numerology, you are carrying karmic debt.

If you know anything about numerology, you may know that certain numbers are particularly important.

Your life path number provides insight into who you are and what your soul is here to do. It can also provide insight into your strengths and weaknesses, as well as your passions. It is calculated by adding up the digits in your birthdate to get a root number. For example, if your birthdate is May 5, 2000, your life path number is 5+5+2 = 12; 1+2 =3.

Your personality number is calculated by adding the number in your birthday rather than your birthdate. In other words you ignore the year. In the example above, your personality number would be 5+5= 10, which breaks down to 1 (1+0).

If the digits add up to 13, 14, 16, or 19 when you’re figuring out your life path or personality numbers, then you are carrying karmic debt. Also, if you were born in any month on any of those days (13, 14, 16, and 19), you chose to carry karmic debt in this lifetime.

How to clear karmic debt

Though karmic debt typically is not pleasant, the good news is you can clear it out in this lifetime and go into your next lifetime free from its grip. Of course, you can also choose not to clear it out. You may choose in this lifetime to ignore it, but if you do, you will be faced with it at some later point whether it’s during this lifetime or the next. We all have free will. We can choose to deal with something or we can choose not to. However, at some point, you will clear your karmic debt; you simply may choose not to do it in this lifetime.

If you do choose to clear karmic debt one of the best things you can do is simply surrender to it. In fact, one of the most powerful actions you can take in life is to surrender to an experience. (One of the best books I’ve read on the topic of surrender is The Surrender Experiment by Michael Singer. )

If you find that you are experiencing a karmic debt, simply surrendering to it and setting the intention to learn the lessons can make a huge difference. Say you have one broken relationship after another.

There are a number of ways you can respond to it.

  • You can swear off relationships.
  • You can become bitter about relationships.
  • You can blame the other party and never do any self-reflection about how you are contributing to the problem.
  • You can surrender and acknowledge that you have a problem and ask for guidance to help you learn the lesson you are meant to learn.

The key to clearing karmic debt is learning the lesson that it is trying to teach you.

What if you don’t want to deal with your karmic debt?

The spiritual path is not a dictatorship. You have the opportunity to choose whatever life you want to live. Even if your higher self had a purpose when you entered this lifetime, you can decide to do something different. The same thing goes with karmic debt.

You may have incarnated at this time with the intention of attracting experiences or people that would lead you to deal with your karmic debts. Sometimes soulmates make a soul contract to interact with one another in such a way that both parties deal with their debt in a particular lifetime.

However, when those experiences take place, you may decide you want no parts of dealing with karmic debt. You have that choice and it’s ok.

If you don’t deal with your karmic debt in this lifetime, it will follow you to another. Eventually, you will learn the lessons you intend to learn; whether it happens now or at a later time is entirely up to you.

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle: Lessons in Reincarnation

I just finished reading The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. While many of the reviews I saw about the book before I read it describe it as being about time travel, I found it to be a book that touches on the themes of reincarnation, spirit guides and karma. If you love exploring metaphysical topics like I do, it provides a lot of lessons on how the soul grows (or doesn’t grow) and evolves from life to life.

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

I’m recommending this book to anyone who has an interest in past lives, parallel lives, spirit guides, karma and deja vu, so if this is you, bookmark this page and come back after you’ve read it.  If you haven’t read it, this post may still be interesting as it will discuss some of the spiritual lessons the book offers. Don’t worry; I won’t include any major spoilers.

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle explained

First let me give you a summary of the plot. The book is about Aiden Bishop, a man who wakes up and finds himself in the middle of a murder mystery. A woman is murdered at a social event, and Aidan must figure out who killed her. But there’s a catch. Each morning, Aiden wakes up in a different body of someone who attended the event. Also, each morning is the beginning of the same day — the day of the murder. Bottom line: Aiden will relive the same day as a different person until he is able to solve the murder. That means he can’t go back to his regular life (and doesn’t even remember what his regular life even looks like).

The book then tells the story from Aiden’s eyes as he moves from person to person ( or life to life). While the essence of Aiden is the same, he takes on the characteristics and qualities of the bodies that he inhabits. Sometimes he has a hard time distinguishing between his true essence and the body he is inhabiting.

I believe this is something we humans do all the time — we have a tough time distinguishing between our higher self or our soul and our ego or our physical body. Sometimes it is difficult for us to remember that our soul transcends our body, which is just a temporary house for our spirits. Here are some other spiritual truths found in The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle.

Every life gives you a different perspective

Each time Aiden wakes up in a different body, he has a different perspective of everything that is happening around him. When he’s in the body of Sebastian Bell, the world is a scary place. On the other hand, when he is in the body of Cecil Ravencourt, he has a knack for seeing the beyond the surface. Each perspective contributes to his ability to solve the mystery. In fact, he would not be able to solve the mystery without all of the different perspectives.

The same goes with us when it comes to our many lifetimes. Each one gives us a different perspective and by seeing the world from many different perspectives, we evolve spiritually. None of our lives are more important than the others; it is through learning from all of our lives that we become more evolved souls.

Strengths and weaknesses have a purpose in each lifetime

All of the bodies Aiden inhabited came with their set of strengths and their set of weaknesses. In the beginning of the book, whenever Aiden inhabited a new body, he focused more on that body’s weaknesses and how difficult it was for him to work around them. For example, if a body was old, he complained about how painful it was to move around.  However, in time, he realized that each body also had its strengths, and the strengths were ideal for helping to solve the mystery.

In our own lives we each have strengths and weaknesses. We came here to learn certain lessons in each lifetime. The strengths and weaknesses we choose to have are the best ones to help us achieve what we want to achieve. When you look at life that way, you realize that your weaknesses have a purpose. So why not lean into those weaknesses and work with them to see what they can teach us? Likewise, our strengths are gifts for this lifetime so when we waste them we are doing ourselves a disservice.

Past life memories can solve current problems

Each time Aiden woke up in a different body as a different person, he had one thing going for him: he could remember what he had learned in all the other bodies he had inhabited. That allowed him to peace things together and see situations more clearly. While most of us can’t remember much, if anything , from our past lives we sometimes have memories or dreams that include fragments of who we were in other lifetimes.

We can also get some of those answers from past life regressions — sessions in which we explore past lives while under hypnosis. When I had a past life regression, I had insights that helped me through a challenging period in my current life. My past life memories shone like a beacon in the darkness of my struggles at the time.

We may have been wicked people in some of our lifetimes

I’ve noticed that a lot of people like to romanticize the concept of past lives, believing themselves to have been royalty, spiritual, a healer, or having some other desired status. Noone wants to find out they were a murderer or someone who is known in history for being an awful person. Noone wants to find out they were Hitler in a past life, right?

In The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, Aiden finds out the person he was before he started inhabiting the different bodies had several flaws.  Anna, a character that Aiden befriends on the journey, also had her flaws; in fact, she had committed many ruthless crimes in her former life. That begs the question: Does that make her a bad person today?

I believe we all have lifetimes that we would be ashamed of. We’ve all done things considered ‘bad’ and we’ve all had lifetimes where we did extraordinary good for the world. Neither type of life is more valuable than the other. We learned from both of them. Also, I believe certain challenging things are meant to happen because they spark change in the world. A war may bring about massive collective change for the good if it leads more people to turn away from war and violence after the fact. The leader who instigated the war may be fulfilling their spiritual purpose by bringing those events to pass.

Spirit guides won’t stop you from making the same mistakes

I’m sure there are a lot of theories about the character known as the Plague Doctor and what he represents. I saw him as something of a spirit guide, helping Aiden when he could but not stopping him from making mistakes — and learning in the process.  We learned that the Plague Doctor was rooting for Aiden and was doing things to try to make it easier to solve the mystery. But ultimately Aiden had to complete his journey on his own.

That’s my basic vision of spirit guides. I believe they are here to help us and guide us and give us messages if we ask for them. However, they never take away our choice. We don’t have to take a certain path even if that path will lead us to our purpose. Eventually we will get there, even if it’s in another lifetime. Our spirit guides know that and allow us to choose our life path.

What we do in one lifetime can affect all of the others

One of most interesting parts of the book was how actions Aiden took in one body affected everything that was experienced by Aiden in a different body — even things that seemed to have happened in the past. Though Aiden was simply tasked with finding out who the murderer was, he decided he wanted to try to stop the murder. So when he woke up each day in a different life, he attempted to rewrite history by making a change — and those changes did affect the timeline for all of the other bodies he inhabited.

This is a popular concept in reincarnation. Since our lives are all connected to our one soul, lessons we learn in one lifetime can affect what happens to us in all of our other lifetimes. So that means a future life can have ramifications on our choices today. Yes, that’s mind-bending.

Until we get the lesson, we are doomed to repeat it

This theme was pretty clear thoughout: until Aiden solved the mystery he had to keep repeating the day of the murder. It was like Groundhog Day, and there was a torturous element to that.

Think about the mistakes we make over and over again. We all have them. And until we correct the mistake or make a different choice, we keep having similar experiences. These repeat experiences can also go from lifetime to lifetime. If there’s a lesson you are meant to get in this lifetime and you don’t get it, you’ll likely be faced with similar experiences to help you get the lesson in a different lifetime.

This concept could also explain deja vu, or the feeling that we’ve had a certain experience before. When we have these experiences, it could very well be true that we’ve lived it before. We may be repeating a lesson or experience with our higher self’s hope of getting it right this time.

It’s a blessing to be able to start a new life without the memories of past lives

When Aiden and Anna are finally able to move on and free themselves from re-living the fated day, they have the opportunity to forget everything about their past lives. That means they get to walk into the unknown without knowing about their past mistakes or frailties. They have a clean slate and won’t be weighed down  by past failure or doubts.

While it can be meaningful to have a past life regression, I’m glad I don’t have past life memories intruding in my mind all the time. I’m glad I can live this current life fully and immerse myself in the lessons I’m faced with in the present. It allows me to move forward without expectations weighing me down and embrace what lies ahead. The 7 1/2 Lives of Evelyn Hardcastle is a reminder to embrace the gifts of the present in order to make the most of the journey.

How Past Life Connections Helped Me Heal

A couple of years ago I wrote about my past life regression experience. It was the first time I had explored a past life with a professional, and it was also my first experience with hypnosis. At the time, I remember thinking it was like watching a movie where I was the star but the storyline was entirely different from the storyline in my current life. Since then, I’ve realized that there were past life connections to my current life that I was not aware of at the time. I also wonder if that past life experience was preparing me somehow for the challenging couple of years that would lie ahead.

Who was I in a past life?

First let me say I have read — and I believe — that most of us have had many past lives. I’ve heard it said that when we have a past life regression, the lifetime that comes to mind is a lifetime that has something to do with the current life we are leading.

The lifetime that we regress to is there to teach us something that we can use in our lives today. On the flip side, there are many other lifetimes that we may not remember because they have no relevance to our current life, or at least this period in our current lifetime.

When I had my past life regression, I was regressed to the life of a woman named Grady who I believe lived in Ireland. She and her husband had financial challenges; they had a lot of land and made their living working the land. However, they had to get rid of all of the workers who helped them to keep the land up because of their money problems.

So I lived through two pandemics?

Grady didn’t seem to be a happy woman. She had a lot of regrets. For one thing, she felt guilty because one of her children had died of an illness. She felt like the family couldn’t afford to get him the best medical care so she was partly responsible for his death. I also got the sense during the regression that Grady and her family had lived through some type of plague because she describes how everyone was getting sick at the time that her son got sick and died.

past life connections

Little did I know when I had that past life regression that the world I lived in would experience a pandemic. I remember reading about plagues in school and thinking they were just horrible experiences people in the past lived through. I never thought I would live through one. Then in 2020 the Covid 19 pandemic hit and suddenly I, like Grady, was living in a world where everyone was getting sick.

This was the first of the past life connections to my current life that I was able to see.

I remember wondering in the fearful early days of the pandemic if this was how Grady had felt. Having had that past life regression, I felt some semblance of peace during the pandemic because I knew Grady had survived. Sure, I could have picked up a history book and seen that there were plenty of survivors of the 1918 flu and other plagues. But having that connection to Grady and knowing that my soul had already survived that experience helped me to believe that I would get through it again.

However, I was worried about my family members and loved ones getting Covid and becoming very sick. I thought about Grady’s son and wondered if I was destined to live that experience over again. Sickness seemed to be such a dominating force in Grady’s life. Was sickness meant to be a major part of my current life too?

Past life memories repeat themselves

I was lucky that none of my loved ones died of Covid. I thank God every day. Some of my family members and friends did get Covid in the early days, but everyone was ok. However, I was not immune to serious illness. At the end of 2020, I began having digestive problems that led me to see a doctor and I was later diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Now I was fighting a life-threatening disease. I couldn’t help but wonder if the guilt I had experienced in the lifetime in which I was Grady had contributed to the illness in my body in this lifetime.

I have read that we can carry our burdens from one lifetime to the next. For example, a painful love experience in one lifetime can lead us to date unavailable partners in the next lifetime. We may not understand why we keep picking the wrong men because the answer lies not in this lifetime but in a past one. In this case, our past life connections are keeping us from flourishing in our current lives.

I wondered if I had felt so guilty about not being able to save my son in that lifetime that I punished myself by going through a major illness myself.

Connecting with my past life counterpart: A ritual

As I went through traditional medical treatments I also practiced some alternative healing practices as well. (I’m not a doctor and am in no way offering medical advice; if you have an illness please make sure you see your doctor. I credit my doctors at the Mayo Clinic for surgery that saved my life.)

One thing I did was I went into meditation to try to connect with Grady.

I closed my eyes and visualized myself in a forest. During the illness, I often saw myself lost in a forest and the sky would typically be overcast showing that there was a storm ahead. During this visualization, the sky was dark and I saw Grady walking toward me. She sat down next to me but didn’t speak.

I asked her if she believed we deserved this illness. I said ‘we’ because I believed I was she and she was I. She continued to say nothing, and she looked down toward the ground. I explained to her that we had done everything we could during her lifetime. I explained to her that our son’s death was not our fault. And I told her I wanted to live. I told her I had a lot of things left that I wanted to complete in this lifetime.  While we sat there, I could see her in my mind’s eye starting to cry and that’s when I started to cry. We hugged in my vision and she told me to heal and live.

That was a powerful visualization that I had — just one of the many metaphysical experiences I had during the illness. One day I will write a book about them and share them. I believe these experiences played a role in my healing.

Past life lessons abound

I write all this to say that we can learn so much about our current lives by exploring our past lives and past life connections. While I plan to have another past life regression to see if I can learn about another one of my lifetimes, not everyone has to have a past life regression. Some people just have memories of past lives that flash through their minds. Others can pick up on past lives through dreams or meditations. If a past life is calling you, there is a reason for that. It has something to tell you. The past life connections to your current life can be the beacon that shows you the next steps on your path.

Modern Witch Tarot Deck Review

I have always loved tarot cards so I have seen my share of decks. The Modern Witch Tarot deck is one of my favorites of all time.

Modern Witch Tarot

Tarot cards play a major role in my life.  In the mornings, I often pull one to three cards to get guidance for the rest of the day. I’ve had fun trading readings with a group of friends who are as interested in metaphysical topics as I am. I also have turned to tarot cards to delve into my psyche, using them as journal prompts and serving as something of a therapist when I didn’t have the money or time to see a human one. I’ve even used tarot cards to attract a love relationship or two.

So yes, you can say I’m sold on their usefulness.

Once you’ve purchased more than one deck, you’ll quickly realize that all tarot decks are not the same. Each one has its own personality and your interpretations of the cards will often vary by deck.  (Of course this assumes that you are using your intuition to read the cards rather than simply memorizing meanings.)

For many people, the Rider Waite Tarot deck is their introduction to tarot. Once they get familiar with the cards, they often look to other decks. The Modern Witch Tarot is one you should definitely check out.

What is the Modern Witch Tarot deck?

The Modern Witch Tarot deck was published in 2019, and was created by Lisa Sterle and Vita Ayala. Lisa Sterle is a comic book artist and Vita Ayala is a writer.  Like all Tarot decks, the Modern Witch deck has 78 cards, all rich with their own symbolism.

The deck is divided into two parts. The 22-card Major Arcana is a subset of cards that represent major events in your life. The 56 Minor Arcana cards have to do with your day-to-day life and all of the little things that make those days up.

While many tarot decks feature more masculine energy than feminine energy, the Modern Witch deck features only women in its imagery. It also features many women of color, making it one of the most diverse tarot card decks I have ever seen.

How to read the Modern Witch Tarot deck?

The Modern Witch Tarot deck comes with a little introductory booklet that gives you meanings for each of the cards. And you can certainly read the meanings and memorize them. But I don’t recommend that. I believe tarot cards are designed to help your intuition verbalize what it is picking up on.

For example, I might be looking at a tarot card and the sun in the picture may stand out to me, telling me that the outcome of a particular situation would be a bright one. I might look at that same tarot card at a different time and a body of water might stand out, telling me that abundance would be an outcome of the topic at hand.

When you get a new tarot deck, I recommend that you take some time to get to know it. Meditate on each card and ask your Spirit Guides what message they want to convey through that card. Some people bond with their tarot cards by sleeping with the card under their pillow.

The more time you spend with the Modern Witch Tarot deck, the more comfortable with the deck you will be. Here is an excellent exercise to help you bond with your tarot deck. The more comfortable you are, the more likely you will be able to interpret the messages that are being relayed in a tarot card reading.

Is the Modern Witch Tarot deck good for beginners?

I don’t believe there is a one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to which decks are best for beginners. I believe tarot cards are personal, in that everyone will be drawn to the deck they are meant to use. If you are drawn to the Modern Witch Tarot deck, I believe you should work with the deck whether you are a tarot beginner or not.

I will say that the Rider Waite can be a good deck to use for beginners mainly because so many books and web sites that deal with tarot refer to that deck in their writings. When I first started learning how to read tarot cards, I did start off with the Rider Waite deck and I still use it sometimes today, along with other decks I am drawn to.

Most people I know who work regularly with tarot cards have multiple decks. Sometimes I’m drawn to work with one; other times I’m drawn to another. There’s no reason why a beginner can’t work with multiple decks as well.

What I like most about the deck

Hands down, the thing I like most is the deck’s diversity. This deck features women and women of color, making it relatable to the world that I live in. I feel empowered when I’m working with these cards, which is a good way to feel when you’re working with a tool to get answers to your biggest life questions.

The imagery also seems very gentle to me. Some tarot cards can seem scary when you pull them.

For example, the 10 of swords in the Rider Waite deck features a man lying face down with 10 swords in his back. Not the most refreshing image to contemplate. The Modern Witch Tarot deck comes with two different 10s of swords cards that you choose from.

In both a woman is lying down with 10 swords in her back. However, in one of the cards, the woman appears to be lying comfortably as she looks at her phone, and below her read the words, “Everything is fine.”

If you’re looking for a new tarot deck, give the Modern Witch Tarot deck a try

Psychic Protection for Empaths

Having a premonition that you are about to get a promotion can be thrilling. Sensing the jealousy of your co-workers — not so much. But if you’re an empath, you can feel the heaviness when someone has negative thoughts about you. It can leave you feeling tired, drained, anxious, or even depressed.  That’s why psychic protection for empaths is so important.

psychic protection for empaths

An empath might also feel the presence of a spirit or a being that is no longer in the physical realm.  I remember one time sensing the presence of a spirit.  I woke up one morning and felt a heaviness on my chest. I knew that someone or something was there, but I could not see it, and I didn’t know what it was. All I knew was that I felt uncomfortable and I was positive that I was not the only one in the room.

When you focus on strengthening your psychic ability, you begin to open doors between the physical world we live in and the supernatural world. Sometimes those open doors are obvious, such as if you are playing with a ouija board. However, other times, you may not realize that the energies of those around you are impacting you. Empaths are particularly vulnerable when they are working with psychic energy.

Empaths can get weighed down by energy

Empaths feel the emotions and the energy of others. Sometimes they even  mistakenly believe that what they are sensing is their own energy when in fact, they are sensing the energy of someone else. I’ve had this happen to me and it can be a confusing experience. For example, an empath might feel depressed all of a sudden and not realize what is making them sad. It might be that they aren’t sad at all; rather they are picking up on the sadness of a family member, a friend or someone else around them. But if they don’t know that, they may feel overwhelmed by a sadness they don’t understand.

I sometimes wonder if some people who commit suicide are empaths who feel so weighed down by other people’s sadness that they can no longer cope.

Here’s another reality empaths must deal with: they are often the victims of psychic attacks. Anytime someone directs negative thoughts toward you that is a psychic attack whether they mean to or not. So those co-workers who are jealous of your promotion and who wish you would mess up at work or get fired are actually launching a psychic attack against you.

If you experience some of the signs of being the victim of a psychic attack, there are ways that empaths can protect themselves or minimize a psychic attack’s effects.

What happens when empaths don’t protect themselves

There are a lot of things that we can’t control. For example, an empath cannot stop someone from initiating a psychic attack either consciously or unconsciously. But an empath has some control into how that negative energy is experienced.

However, when an empath does not take steps to protect themselves, they could experience physical and emotional consequences.

They might feel overwhelmed, tense, anxious, depressed. They may find themselves dreading certain people or types of experiences. For example, if you’re an empath and there is a lot of negative energy expressed in the workplace, you could begin to hate going to work and the quality of your work could suffer. Over time, the quality of your work might suffer so much that you are in danger of losing your job. In this scenario, failing to protect your energy could cost you financially if you lose your job.

Empaths who don’t protect themselves may also feel extreme stress. There are many studies that show the consequences of stress. For example, several physical disorders have been connected to stress, including heart problems, digestive challenges, and respiratory problems.

Empaths who don’t protect themselves may also suffer socially. If you feel overwhelmed whenever you are around people, you’re going to start looking for ways to avoid being around people. This can keep you from enjoying friendships, romantic relationships, and other interactions that can bring much joy to you in life.  Psychic protection for empaths is a critical need that should be addressed.

How to block negative energy as an empath

One of the best ways to protect yourself from negative energy is to literally block it. When I was growing up, I used to love the Wonder Twins, a cartoon about twins with special powers. They had the ability to shapeshift into whatever form they needed to be in order to solve their current dilemma. When I block negative energy, I often think of myself as one of the Wonder Twins, using my powers to keep energy vampires and other toxic thought forms at bay.

If you want to block negative energy, first you have to believe you can do it.  If you don’t believe it’s possible, stop reading right now. Once you are ready to embrace your power, do the following:

1. Set the intention that you will protect yourself from any negativity that is formed toward you.

2. Visualize yourself surrounded by a white light, a bubble, a veil or some other form that can separate you from harm.

3. Ask God/your Spirit Guides/the Universe or whatever higher power you believe in to keep all negative energy on the other side of the light, bubble or veil.

4. Say a prayer of thanksgiving and know that it is done.

Setting the intention to block negative energy can be powerful and effective, but you may have to do it on a regular basis before you see a noticeable difference. Some people suggest doing it every day. I think that’s a good idea but in all honesty, I don’t remember to do it every day. If you feel negative energy around you,  employing this exercise regularly for a couple of weeks may make a big difference in how you feel.

Some of my favorite empath protection stones

If you’re into crystals, it probably comes to no surprise to you that there are crystals that offer psychic protection for empaths. After all there’s likely a crystal that can help you in any endeavor,

Some of these stones help to ground empaths and keep other energies from affecting them as much. Others literally help to block negative energy. Below are a few of my favorites.

Hematite: Best for general grounding. When I wear or carry hematite, I tend to feel calmer and less anxious.

Amethyst: Raises one’s vibration. Amethyst has a spiritual vibe, and I carry it when I need to feel uplifted or when I need spiritual guidance.

Obsidian: I use obsidian when I’m dealing with negative energy and I want to protect myself from it.

Black tourmaline: I use black tourmaline when I’m dealing with negative energy and I want to protect myself from it.

You might want to keep one of these crystals in your pocket or pocketbook. You can also keep them in a location where you are particularly impacted by energy such as the workplace.
